Asurankundu Dam is just a 30 minutes’ walk from Vadakkanchery. The road on the right side at Attoor in the Vazhakkad- Plazhi road leads to the dam area. As you move from the serene Attoor region to the dam area, you have to pass through the wildness of Machad Forest. The lush green area with neatly planted trees in between reminds one of the forest paths. This path ends at the dam. It lies elegantly in a vast area of forest. There is a 1 feet wide path to walk over the dam. The clear sky, the beautiful landscape and the ripples in the gentle water makes you feel relaxed and happy. The black palmyra leaves waving gently on the trees and the small rock mounts seen everywhere gives this place a surreal and disarming beauty. The place doesn’t have many visitors and is a quiet place to enjoy the day. Here you can find many shrubs and herbs which have been fast disappearing from even remote villages. Asurankundu is the ‘rehabilitation’ area of snakes which are caught by the forest department at Vadakkanchery, Akamala, Machad and Chelakkara. Asurankundu and the surrounding areas are also a land of biodiversity.
