Johannesburg, also known as Joburg, is the largest city in South Africa. Land of highly esteemed Nelson Mandela, the people here are great lovers of football and cricket.  Joburg is also the land of diamond mines such as Kimberley, Cullinan and so on. There are also many goldmines here. When the first goldmine was discovered in the eighteenth century, it triggered the Witwatersrand Gold Rush and fortune-seekers from all over the world rushed to the region. This led to the development of the city of Johannesburg. Now this city can be compared to any other developed European city.  An old goldmine, the ‘Gold Reef City’ has been converted to an amusement part. This park is themed around the gold rush. The park offers a widest range of attractions which include casinos and exciting rides which gives an unforgettable experience to the visitors.  The main attraction is a ride through the gold mine underground. Children, pregnant ladies and people with breathlessness are not allowed inside. Although there are many levels, visitors are allowed only till the 5th level. This goldmine is supposed to be 3.2km deep. Thus, it is one of deepest goldmines in the world. People are taken down to a 225m distance on a lift and then they have to walk through the mine tunnel. During its prime time, rocks containing gold were broken and taken out of the mine to separate gold and other impurities. Later when the gold content of the rocks became less and the expenditure increased, the mine was closed down. As a part of the expedition, a demonstration on how they used to mine gold is shown. It would be a unique experience to see and feel how they did it in the olden days.
