As a result of the trade between Arabia and Persia, lot of gold coins known as ‘pon-nanyangal’ were used in this region. According to legends this is how the land came to be known as Ponnani. This region has witnessed many historical events like the rule of Zamorins and battle of Tipu Sultan. The popular Mamankam, a festival of medieval ages was conducted in Thirunavaya, on the banks of Nila river which is also known as Bharathapuzha. Ponnani lies at the meeting place of this historical river and Arabian Sea. In the earlier years, a trip by jankar from Ponnani beach to the Padinjarekkara beach was one of the unforgettable experience of the travellers who visited here. Unfortunately, these days boat services are used instead of the jankars. Most of the locals here are fishermen. As you travel from one beach to the other, you will see thatched houses built with coconut leaves and bamboo sticks. The sight of shops and houses with randhal lamps hanging from the roofs is a delightful scene
