In the 70s’, the Thangassery Post office in Kollam, used to receive letters addressed to a ‘Julie’. This was the time when the yesteryears popular movie ‘Chattakkari’ (1974) was released. Just like Julie’s mom Margaret whose dream was to settle in England, most of the people here have left the place. A few remnants like the post office, a 115 years old light house, a church, 2 schools and a few villas remain. People here still remember those well planned bungalows and dance halls at cross-roads, the clubs and the play grounds, which no longer exist here.
The most remarkable attraction here is of course the light house. In the olden days one had to climb 192 steps to reach at the top. But fortunately there is a lift service which in turn has helped to bring in more tourists, who wish to climb up the light house. The view of the sea and Kollam from atop is breath-taking. Every 15 seconds, a moving lens throws light into the sea which must have been bringing hope and happiness to the sailors out there in the dark deep sea since a hundred years. This light house has faced many sea fury and manual disruptions. It may have also witnessed romance and dance steps like those of Julie. Those who wish to visit this beautiful light house can use bus transport from Kollam railway station or an auto which will cost 60 Rupees to reach here in 10 minutes.
