Gavi is evergreen forest in Pathanamthitta District. As part of Periyar Tiger reserve there is restricted tourism allowed on this forest. Gavi is situated 3,400 metres above the sea level. Even during extreme hot season the temperature will strike 10 degrees in the evening. Hills covered with grasses is one attractive feature. From one of these hills Sabrimala's distant view can be visualised.
Trees and flowers that are not usually seen can attract nature lovers. Even for bird watchers this place is apt. Woodpecker, Hornbill and 323 types of birds are there. Tiger, elephant, Leopard, Bear and many other animals are inhabitants of this place. 63 types of animals and 45 different types of reptiles are here. The long journey through the forest will refresh all the mind. In the midst of forest there are opportunities to go for trekking along with forest guards and to stay in tents. As part of Sabrimala's water power electricity one lake is there in Gavi. The building which was made during the construction of dam is used as forest mansion. This is the only place where tourist stay. Packages ranges from Rs.950 to Rs.1750. But in advance bookings are required. Film Ordinary's shooting was the first film shot over here. Gavi is situated 28km away from Vandiperiyar on the NH Highway. There are KSTRC services from Kottayam, Trivandrum and Erakulam to Vandiperiyar. On the way through Kumaly to Vandiperiyar Kannimara Estate can be seen. Vehicles like Jeep are the best for the journey. From Vandiperiyar and from Kumaly such vehicles can be availed. Vallakadavu check post is situated 9 km away from Vandiperiyar. Entry passes are available at Vallakadavu Forest department Check post. In addition there are KSTRC services from Pathanamthitta District. It's through Vadacherikara, Perinad, Puthukadu, Manakayam. Bus timing is at 6.30am and at 12.30pm. The nearest railway stations are 70km apart Theni and 120km apart Kottayam. Kochi and Trivandrum airports are the nearest airports which are 200 and 250 away from Gavi respectively.
