Mahabalipuram, is a town in Kancheepuram district in Tamil Nadu. It is a small region lying between the Bay of Bengal and the Great Salt Lake. The coastal region of the lake is a beautiful sight with fishing boats and nets lying on the coast, seagulls and storks that are flying above in large numbers. The locals here seem to lead a simple yet satisfied life. One side of the lake has steep rocks which gives it the look of a rock quarry.
This lake is a boon to the people of Mahabalipuram since they depend on the water here for everything other than drinking purpose. Surrounded by rocks, the lake has a clear pool of water. Mahabalipuram, earlier known as Mamallapuram, is a small town. The place has more visitors than the locals. The town has a large number of vehicles in its premises. Natives who carved beautiful sculptures from the rock have long disappeared. Yet there are a few who still follow the traditional job. Mahabalipuram has many stupas, stone carvings and temple caves built during the reign of Pallava Kings. Every Indian should visit this beautiful village at least once in a life time to see the magnificent sculptures built by the descendants of the Dravidian dynasty. It’s a lovely coastal village with beautiful sea shores and many temples, proudly displaying its rich heritage and culture.
