Gundara is situated deep inside a thick forest area. It is a spot accessible only once in a year. To reach here, take the Mananthavadi -Bavali- Mysore route from Wayanad and once you reach the Kerala-Karnataka border area of Bavali forest check post, turn right after 5km at Machur. As you travel you will see the Kabani river, the beautiful green fields and mud houses with grass roofs built in traditional way. Most of the people here belong to the Gowda caste and are farmers. This village in Karnataka is a picturesque place where woodland and countryside seem to blend with each other After you have passed a church and around 10 houses, you will see the forest department building and check post. You will have to show a valid reason for travelling into the forest. From here onwards it is going to be thick woodland with very few houses here and there. The roads are in a very bad condition and after travelling for about 5km, the road ends abruptly on the banks of river Kabani. The pilgrim spot lies in Gundara which can be reached after crossing Kabani and travelling for another 9km deep inside Bandipur. Only once in a year does the Karnataka Forest department grant permission to visit here.
