Nainital is an exquisite land with beautiful lakes and hills of Kumaon which captivates the heart of the visitor who comes here. Lying 6837 feet above sea level in the foothills of the Kumaon ranges, this beautiful land is also known as India’s lake district. The best time to visit here is usually from October to May. But this place boasts of tourists throughout the year and is one of the most popular hill stations in North India. The weather remains pleasant throughout the year and the is easy to reach either by road or train. So, it attracts tourists all the time. The Lake Naini is located in the heart of Nainital. This land came to be called Nainital because of the Naini lake situated here. The one end of the lake is at Tallital while the other side is called the Mallital.
This pretty lake which has the shape of a kidney, is 1.4km long, 28m deep and 42m in width. Historians say that this lake was discovered by a British businessman Mr.P. Baron who had come here for hunting. There is a Naini Devi temple, a mosque and a British church St. Francis near the lake. This picturesque lake is surrounded y seven hills namely Ayarpata, Deopata , Handi Bandi , Cheena ,  Alma, Laria Kanta and Sher-ka-Danda. Pilgrims coning after Himalaya darshan can view the lake from the lake view point on the side and the sight is absolutely stunning. Another picturesque spot is the Khurpatal lake which changes colour like a chameleon according to the changes in weather. This lake with its lush green banks and water is breath-takingly beautiful and heavenly to stay at. This beautiful but not well-known lake lies just 12km away from Nainital.
