Udupi district was formed in August, 1997. Udupi, Kuntapura and Karkala were separated from Dakshina Kannada district to form a new district. Udupi has Uttara Kannada district in the west, Dakshina Kannada district in the south, Chikmagalur district in the east and Shimoga district on its north-eastern side.
Malpe beach is one of the most popular tourist spots in Udupi. This beautiful place boasts of a clean beach and stalls which sell mouth-watering food items. Several cultural and sports events are conducted here. Thousands of tourists visit here every year to enjoy boating, fishing and bathing in the sea. There are some good hotels and resorts which attract tourists with entertainment programs. Malpe is also an important port and fishing centre. The main attraction of Malpe beach is however a few islands that lie not far away from the sea shore. The most important among them is the picturesque St. Mary’s island which has white sand and jagged rocks. The sight of coconut palms would remind you of the scenic beauty of Kerala.

It has 3 thaluks (Madikeri, Virajpeta and Somwarpet ) and two assembly constituencies – Madikeri and Virajpeta. Kodagu district is a part of Mysore parliamentary constituency
