The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is the only railway track that uses rack system to climb up the mountain paths. Included in the UNESCO world heritage site, the train that runs on its track is known as the ‘Heritage Train’. This train travels at a speed of only 10.4 km/hour and hence is the slowest train in India. It starts from Mettupalayam which is just 330m above sea level and travels a distance of 46 km to reach Ooty which is 2200 km above sea level. This tourist train takes four and a half hours to reach its destination. Other than Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is also a part of UNESCO’s world heritage sites.
