Salalah is a beautiful destination which is similar to Kerala. Situated amidst tall mountains, Salalah enjoys a cool climate compared to the hot climate in other places of Gulf. Salalah is also known as ‘mini Kerala’ since it boasts of a similar landscape. Salalah has greenery all around, lovely weather, overflowing streams, coconut palms and banana plantations. The soil is fertile and almost anything can be grown here.
There is another attraction in Oman which is a beautiful village on the top of a mountain here - Al Wakan. Situated 2000m above sea-level, this tiny village is a favourite destination now. You can walk around enjoying the cool breeze and the spectacular view of the surrounding areas. Although it is on top of a mountain, the people here cultivate grapes and pomegranates. They depend on the oasis here ‘Wadi Mistal’ for the water for cultivation. One can also see many houses from the bygone era. The Oman government has constructed roads and other facilities to go up the mountain. To reach Al Wakan which is surrounded by mountains, one has to go off-road and climb 3km. Only 4-wheel drive facility vehicles can be used for this journey. You can also reach here by paying the Omani drivers you find at the foothills. The ride is very risky and has to be driven carefully to avoid falling into the gorge in the side of the road.
