Lying in the northeastern state of Manipur, this lake is a very popular tourist destination. This beautiful lake is situated in Bishnupur district, at a distance of 53 km from Imphal, the capital of Manipur. So, it is practically easy to reach here either by bus transport or taxis. Loktak lake is the world’s only floating lake. It has circular floating swamps which look like tiny islands. The locals here catch fish from these swamps to earn their livelihood. These tiny islands are called phumdis in the local language. Sometimes artificial swamps are built for fish farming. A tour to the region is incomplete without a trip to Sandra island here. This is the most popular island among the tourists and locals alike. Sandra island is an epitome of natural beauty. Other than boating, they provide many entertainments also. The cafeteria at the Sandra tourist home, is a major attraction here. The floating swamps, the shimmering blue waters, the labyrinthine fishing boats all provide a fascinating sight for the visitors. An overall view of the magnificent lake is possible from the cafeteria. This amazing lake is a home and breeding ground for country as well as migratory birds.
