Pakhiralaya is a village in West Bengal which includes Gosaba Island in the eastern coast. This village lies next to the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve Forest. The locals here depend on fishing, honey collection and cultivation for their livelihood. A little-known hamlet where modern facilities are yet to peep in, this village was electrified just three years ago.
Even that with low voltage every day. The residential facilities set up for Sundarbans visitors still depend on generators. There are no cars in Pakhiralaya village. The only luxury vehicle here is the Ape autorickshaws. Most of the families here have a small pond in front of their homes. They use the water here for washing, bathing and cleaning utensils. They also do fish farming in these ponds. Most of the resorts also provide water from these ponds except for drinking. The water looks greenish and has an unpleasant odour. It takes three and a half hours to reach Godkali from Kolkata. There is a boat service from here to Gosaba. The Sundarbans visitors can get accommodation in Gosaba.
